Hound Association of Scotland 2011 Critique

Thanks to all exhibitors. It was great to judge in such pleasant conditions and the sun shining. I was particularly pleased that no exhibits had significant stripping of coat, presentation being generally good. I was concerned by the number with large, untypical feet - perhaps lack of exercise in a bad winter?

PD
(3) 1 BD and Res DCC, Finnett &Harrington's Hyndsight Tempest. 10 month old puppy in beautiful condition, his movement was amazing for such a youngster, good head and expression, strong neck, good shoulder, sweeping quarters, well grown for his age. It was great to see him win Res BPIS. 2 Marshall's Chanterfield Ghost. Another nice puppy but not quite the balanced construction of the winner, moved ok. 3 Smith-Fenton's Wickwar Walter At Intack.

JD(2) 1 Hogan's Breesfalt Jasper. Good head, dark eye, strong neck, at a difficult age, would prefer more angulation. 2 Morton &Morgan's Cotherstone Shot And Steel. A very different type of dog, much stronger head, has potential, but needs to lose weight to be fully appreciated.

PGD(2) A disappointing class. 1 Swanson &O'Brien's Menteith Declan. Not the biggest Deerhound, moved ok. 2 Swanson &O'Brien's Wolfscastle Danas. Larger than first, very pale colour. I was told he is a rescue and is lacking body which spoilt him.

LD(6) A very nice class, the first three being very close in quality. 1 Hawkins' Kwaricott Asclepius. A good type of Deerhound with no sign of coarseness. Elegant head, strong neck, well laid shoulder, powerful ribcage, good bone, moved well. 2 Barret's Stranwith Symphony. Another good honest Deerhound without any exaggeration, moved well. 3 Rose's Gentiehun Tain.

OD(4) 1, DCC and BOB, Hawkins' Kwaricott Archimago. A really lovely dog, in excellent coat and condition, good head, dark eye, powerful neck, good front and rear shape, excellent on the move. 2 Gillie's Dorrator Gethen. Very similar to the winner in type and quality, lacked the show presence of the winner. 3 Menteith Declan.

PB(3) 1 Finnett &Heathcote's Hyndsight Taken By The Wind. Litter sister to BP, a beautiful puppy with all the essentials, moving very steadily. 2 Marshall's Chanterfield Forget Me Not. Feminine head and expression, another well constructed puppy, but not as collected today. 3 Macbean's Kirstain At Killoeter.

JB(9, 3) 1 Smith-Fenton's Regalflight Malindi At Intack. Very beautiful feminine bitch with good springy movement and sound construction, good body, particularly nice feet. 2 Milne &Andrews' Leoch Heather. Very similar to the winner, good neck and shoulder, sound movement. 3 Robertson's Gentiehun Thyme.

PGB(10, 1) A very nice class. 1 Rose's Gentiehun Mia-May. A very typical feminine Deerhound. Not overdone sizewise, neat ears, good lay of shoulder, correct hindquarters, shown in good, hard, muscular condition. 2 Gillie's Dorrator Song For Drella. A little taller than the winner but another nice bitch, good lay of shoulder, depth of brisket, moved well. 3 Foote &Crossan's Cusidh Caol Muile.

LB
(5, 2) 1 and Res BCC, Barret's Stranwith Morag. Not the biggest Deerhound but true quality in construction and movement, very sound, a very beautiful feminine bitch, moved with free flowing movement. 2 Reynolds' Wickwar White Lace. Larger than the winner, not quite as good in shoulder, but moved really well. 3 Doaks' Rosslyn Plainsong.

OB(6, 1) 1 and BCC, Janson's C Nixophel Crystal Amethyst. A beautiful bitch with lovely feminine head and expression, excellent construction and really sound on the move. 2 Platt's Charbonnel Fliss. Beautiful head and expression, good shoulder and hindquarter shape, a little lethargic on the move. 3 Finnett &Heathcote's Hyndsight Who's That Girl.
